Inspiring young minds and empowering young voices: A primary role in conservation (Conservation Careers)

Can a primary (elementary) school teacher be a conservationist? It wasn’t a question on Edd Moore’s mind when he first took his job as a freshly qualified teacher, trained in sport science. However, having soon decided to create a school garden, he continued along this unexpected path and transformed his campus from an ‘eco’ blank canvas to a multi-award-winning eco-school, with a fully integrated environmental curriculum.

Today, we have the pleasure of speaking with Edd Moore, a primary school teacher and eco-coordinator at Damers First School. We are delighted to introduce Edd Moore as one of our superhero teachers. Here are Edd’s tips on “Embedding Nature and Sustainability into the Curriculum.” The Department for Education’s (DfE) Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy published in 2022, emphasises the importance of incorporating nature-based learning in schools. This guide will provide practical ways to integrate sustainability and environmental education across subjects in a meaningful way, fostering student awareness and engagement with the natural world. We are delighted to introduce Edd Moore as one of our superhero teachers.

Edd Moore has been at the forefront of education around environment and sustainability for the last ten years. He has built up the primary school's eco work from a blank canvas to one of the top eco schools in the country, embedding the environment into the school's curriculum. Edd has led the school he has worked for to win multiple national environment awards that include Eco Schools Eco Primary School of the Year, Surfers Against Sewage Schools Champion of the Year, Jane Goodall Roots and Shoots UK Best Group of the Year to name a few. Edd teaches the future generations about sustainability - creating initiatives and programmes that are shaping not only his pupils' futures but those of the schools he works with.
